YOU can make an impact!
As you know, at RCC, we help families navigate some of the most stressful times in a child’s life. And while some of the problems we face are new, including the growing heroin crisis in the suburbs, some are familiar rites of passage families have faced for generations. For more than 50 years, we’ve been your local go-to source for “The Talk,” whether that “talk” is about puberty and sexual development or teaching children how their bodies work, and how to keep them safe by avoiding alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. Rest assured, all of our programs are designed and taught using educational best-practices aligned to state and national standards. At RCC, we’re focused on results; making sure students learn what we teach, so they are prepared for the tough decisions they’ll make through adolescence and the teen years.
How do we know we are making a difference? Every new program area is assessed by an external evaluator for effectiveness, like Loyola University and the Iowa Consortium for Substance Abuse Research and Evaluation. Every student we teach receives pre and post testing through an electronic audience response system that collects and displays the data. We know the individual and class results immediately. And some of the results?
- Children better understand how drug usage affects their brains - The percentage of 4-6 graders in our Science Behind Drugs and Prevention program who understand how drugs effect the brain rose from 10 to 75 percent after one class.
- Children’s comfort level talking to adults about puberty increases - 72 percent of 5th grade boys and 66 percent of 5th grade girls report they now feel more comfortable talking about puberty and the reproductive system to their parents or an adult after attending our puberty education class and learning science-based content and effective communication skills.
- Children understand and remember lessons about healthy eating and exercise - Lehigh University’ s six-month study on our obesity prevention program, “FIT”, concluded that the students had a statistically-significant gain in knowledge regarding the topics taught, and they retained that knowledge 6 weeks later.
So what does this all mean for you? We lay the groundwork for the important talks parents and other adults have with kids during these important, formative years. We provide practical knowledge that helps families every day. We promote ongoing dialogue around subjects that can be tough for parents to tackle. For those who have had the “talk” with a child, you know how valuable that is! That is why we encourage you to invest in our PROVEN RESULTS!
SO PLEASE INVEST NOW IN PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION.
